Members of girl band quartet MAMAMOO are not K-pop stars on the music video of the group's latest number “HIP,” released Thursday. Instead, they play various roles: Hwasa a mother and president; Moonbyul a CEO; Solar a rock star and Wheein an environmental activist.
For CEO Moonbyul and rock star Solar, it was a dream come true. The basic concept, of course, is that they wanted to display their different sides.
Their core message is that everything hinges on your attitude and mindset, whoever you are.
“We wanted to show that attitude makes people hip, regardless of appearance or occupation,” Wheein said during an album showcase on Thursday at the Grand Peace Palace at Kyung Hee University in Seoul.
Hwasa said: “'HIP' talks about living a life without caring too much about the public eye. Real hipness comes from loving yourself, so we hope the listeners become confident by cherishing themselves more, instead of being conscious of other people.”
“HIP,” the lead track of the group's second studio album “reality in BLACK,” boasts an addictive melody with a touch of rhythmical brass and strings sounds. Hwasa took part in the lyric-making. Some compelling lyrics read: “Wherever you go, you can shine. You are the only one in this world. But why are you abusing yourself.”
The 11-track EP also contains the fan song “I'm Your Fan,” the jazz hip-hop “High Tension,” the contrasting “rEALITY,” the electronic synth-pop “ZzZz,” the groovy “4x4ever,” the sentimental “Ten Nights,” the bubbly “Universe,” the synth-pop R&B “Better” and the magnificent “Destiny.”
Among them, “Destiny” epitomizes the band's musical universe at this time, which revolves around a parallel world where the four are not MAMAMOO members, but women with different occupations.
“The lyrics disclose that MAMAMOO members will end up bumping into each other although we exist in separate worlds, because we are destined to meet,” Hwasa said.
The members also delivered their thoughts on their bold and confident image.
“We don't act on purpose to be seen confident. That looks insincere,” Hwasa said. “We are merely being natural.”
Rapper Moonbyul wrapped up the event, saying: “Our goal is to sing a song that could encourage people and send them messages. Hence, please continue keeping your eyes on us and see how we go.”
