British jazz bassist Dave Holland will perform with his quintet on Oct. 28 in Seoul.

Featuring Robin Eubanks (Trombone), Chris Potter (saxophone), Steve Nelson (Vibraphone) and Nate Smith (Drums), he will present his classic jazz performance, playing assorted pieces from ``Critical Mass,'' an album, which was released last year, during the Seoul concert.

Holland is known for overcoming the limits of the bass, which is often perceived as a rhythm support to other main instruments, and extending the possibility of the bass as a melodic instrument.

He began to be known to the public when he was first picked out to guest on the albums of jazz maestro Miles Davis, ``In A Silent Way'' and ``Bitches Brew,'' in his early 20s.

His quintet was formed in 1997, gaining popularity from its albums, ``Points of View'' and ``Critical Mass'' and ``Extended Play: Live at Birdland.''

Particularly, its albums, ``Points of View'' and ``Prime Directive'' were nominated for the Grammy Awards. Also Downbeat, American magazine, named the band as ``No.1 Acoustic Jazz Group.''

Holland worked as a leader and as a sideman with many other jazz artists in the 1970s, including Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers, and the Gateway Trio with John Abercrombie and Jack DeJohnette.

The Gateway trio released two modern jazz albums in 1975 and 1977, and reformed in 1994 for a recording session which created another two albums.

After that, Holland created a variety of quartets and quintets and continued to occasionally work as a sideman for Herbie Hancock and others.

He and his quintet have won multiple Grammy nominations and awards. He is known for his patronage of many young jazz musicians. The quintet has also recorded as the Dave Holland Big Band, along with eight brass and saxophone players. The second Big Band recording, ``Overtime'' (2004) was released on Holland's own Dare2 record label.

The concert will be held at LG Arts Center in southern Seoul. Tickets cost from 30,000 to 70,000 won.
