'Crazy Rich Asians' to premiere in Korea on Oct. 25

After its smash success in the U.S., the film “Crazy Rich Asians” is aiming to do the same in Korea from Oct. 25.

The movie, based on the book of the same name, topped the U.S. box office sales for three consecutive weeks.

The story is about Rachel Chu, a Chinese-American professor of economy at New York University, who finds out that her boyfriend, Nick Young, is from a prosperous family in Singapore. She meets his mother in Singapore, and goes through a variety of experiences there.

The cast ― including protagonists Constance Wu and Henry Golding ― all have Asian backgrounds. This is unusual, because most Asian actors in Hollywood mostly appear in minor or supporting roles.

In fact, it is 25 years since a major Hollywood studio produced another film with an all-Asian actors ― “The Joy Luck Club” in 1993.

“Crazy Rich Asians” has also been praised for avoiding the prejudices and stereotypes about Asians, who are usually portrayed as a brainy but boring group of people. The characters in the movie are far from this ― they are humorous and confident.

The film is also set to be released in China on Nov. 30.
