Samsung SDI Co. on Tuesday rolled out curved batteries for wearable smart devices, which it said offer significantly longer battery life than those offered by its rivals.
The Samsung affiliate, the world's No. 1 maker of smartphone batteries, said the 210mAh-model has five times the life compared with previous smartband batteries. The battery is used in Samsung Electronics Co.'s Gear Fit launched globally on Friday.
With the improved battery, the Gear Fit can stay on for up to five days at low usages on a single charge.
Samsung SDI said the latest battery gave the smartband more leeway in featuring cutting-edge functions through longer life. Its latest lineup was made possible by the so-called V-bending technology, which reduces the size but enlarges capacity.
"As the global market for smartbands is anticipated to expand sharply in the near future, Samsung SDI will continue to make efforts to become the No. 1 player in the smartband batteries market," said Lee Kyung-sang, a company official.
Citing data compiled by ABI Research, Samsung SDI said the global demand for wearable devices is expected to reach 487 million units in 2018, growing nearly 10-fold from the 53 million units in 2013. (Yonhap)
