Choi, 58, was promoted to governor of the Financial Supervisory Service in March from deputy governor. He is the first official to take the helm of the FSS through such a move ― all his predecessors were from outside the agency.

Choi served as commissioner of the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit under the Financial Services Commission from 2009 to 2011.

He is known as a global-minded official with experience in politics and administration.

Since starting his career in 1983, he has worked in the finance ministry, the World Bank as a senior official and Cheong Wa Dae as a junior secretary. In 2008, he also worked as an advisor to the National Policy Committee of the ruling Grand National Party (now Saenuri Party).

Born in 1955 in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province, Choi majored in biology at Seoul National University. He obtained a master’s degree in public administration at the same university in 1983.
