Samsung Display has developed QuantumBlack display film for Quantum Dot (QD)-OLED monitors, which reduces light reflection while enhancing durability, the company said Thursday.

The company said it has recently completed trademark registration of QuantumBlack as a new film technology brand and will apply it to all new QD-QLED monitor products scheduled for launch this year.

QuantumBlack is a low-reflection film that reduces light reflection by 20 percent compared to the company’s existing film. It also improves panel hardness from 2H to 3H. Hardness, measured in H, indicates resistance to surface scratches, with higher numbers representing greater durability.

QD-OLED displays are self-emissive and can achieve true black by turning off individual pixels. In real-world environments, however, ambient light can be reflected on the screen, making it difficult for users to see clearly.

By applying QuantumBlack, ambient light reflected on the screen can be significantly reduced, improving display performance in areas such as gaming. In gaming contents, true black can define the boundaries between objects and backgrounds more clearly and add greater depth and dimensionality. This is particularly beneficial in first-person shooter games, where it helps clearly reveal enemy silhouettes and item locations.

The company said QuantumBlack also improves panel durability. While displays with lower hardness are more vulnerable to scratches during movement or cleaning, a 3H rating indicates resistance to scratches even when in contact with a fingernail.

Samsung Display said QuantumBlack films will be applied to new monitors which will be released to global customers this year, including ASUS’ Black Shield, Gigabyte and Obsidian Shield brands.

“QuantumBlack technology is a premium solution that further strengthens QD-OLED’s advantage of delivering deep and perfect black, providing a differentiated level of immersion while also improving panel durability,” Samsung Display Head of Large Display Marketing Team Jung Yong-wook said. “We will continue to introduce innovative technologies to create new user experiences across gaming and content environments.”
