The head of the Korean unit of China's telecom equipment maker Huawei has said LG Uplus, the nation's third-largest mobile carrier, is one of its important global clients, hinting that it would step up cooperation with LG Uplus.

Huawei Korea CEO Balian Wang made the remarks Wednesday amid lingering concerns over security risks surrounding the Chinese company, with the U.S. government reportedly urging Korea to reject Chinese technologies.

In a year-end meeting with reporters, Wang said LG Uplus is one of its "important global clients" and the Chinese company is prepared to provide its technology and solutions to LG Uplus throughout their cooperation.

Wang said Huawei has navigated through challenges this year amid geopolitical rifts, rising inflation and an economic slowdown.

The U.S. has long accused Huawei, one of the world's leading vendors of 5G network equipment, of spying, claiming the Chinese company can compromise the country's internet communications and steal sensitive information.

In response to the U.S. stance, LG Uplus, the only local carrier using Huawei's 5G equipment, has said the Chinese firm has proven its equipment's security, indicating it will not cut ties with Huawei. (Yonhap)
