LG Innotek is improving its capability in the eco-friendly material sector, receiving a Green Technology Certification from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for its material technology, the company said on Tuesday.
The Green Technology Certification is a type of accreditation in which the government recognizes eco-friendly technologies that can contribute to societal sustainability.
LG Innotek received the certification for its nano-polycrystalline thermoelectric material technology, which is a core material applied to thermoelectric systems for industrial power generation such as ships.
As thermoelectric power generation produces electricity using waste heat, the system is able to reduce energy consumption used for power generation. If a thermoelectric power generation system with LG Innotek's nano-polycrystalline thermoelectric material is mounted on a ship, around 892 tons of fuel can be saved annually per ship, the company said.
In addition to ships, if a thermoelectric system using LG Innotek's material is applied to steel mill processes, it can also be expected to reduce carbon dioxide by about 40 tons per year.
At a time when eco-friendly technologies are becoming increasingly important, LG Innotek has been actively using technologies to make the world a greener place throughout its entire product development process.
Since 2006, the company has been applying a hazardous substance inspection system in order to monitor if any of its products contain environmentally harmful substances.
In 2022, the company introduced life cycle assessment (LCA), a globally used environmental evaluation system, to check the environmental impact of its products.
“With ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) factors becoming increasingly important, the significance of eco-friendly products and technologies across all industries will grow,” said Jeong Cheol-dong, CEO and president of LG Innotek. “As a leading company in ESG, we will continue to expand the development of various eco-friendly technologies and products to innovate in customer experience.”
