Samsung Electronics presented the latest models of its premium foldable phones at slashed prices, Wednesday, as part of its survival strategy at a time when Chinese smartphone vendors are encroaching on its market share.
Unveiled at the company's online “Unpacked” event were the Galaxy Z Fold3 5G and Galaxy Z Flip3 5G, featuring improvements from previous models in terms of durability, entertainment experience and design, according to the company. The new models will be launched in the U.S., Europe and Korea, Aug. 27, priced at a respective $1,799.99 and $999.99.
The latest models are rated IPX8 water resistant for the first time and are constructed from Armor Aluminum ― the strongest aluminum ever used on a Galaxy smartphone ― along with the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus to protect against scratches and accidental drops. Both devices also have a new protective film made of stretchable PET and optimized display panel layers resulting in a main screen that is 80 percent more durable than previous devices.
The under display camera technology enables Z Fold3 users to fully engage in the content of their choice on the 7.6-inch infinity flex display.
A key characteristic of the model is that, for the first time, it comes with an S Pen, which has been part of the Galaxy Note series.
The Z Fold3's large screen makes it possible for users to multitask, such as joining a video call on the device's top screen while checking meeting notes on the bottom. An updated multi-active window enables users to make dinner plans by text while checking a calendar, all on the devices large screen.
The Z Fold3 has a sleeker, thinner and lighter design than its predecessor. It is available in three colors: phantom black, phantom green and phantom silver.
Meanwhile, the Z Flip3's cover screen is four times larger than previous models, making it easier to view notifications and messages without having to open the phone.
The model's camera features enable users to take selfies hands free with the Flex mode and also take photos and even videos with the device folded, from the cover screen.
“With the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, Samsung is once again redefining the possibilities with foldable smartphones that empower users with the flexibility and versatility needed for today's fast-paced world,” said Roh Tae-moon, president and head of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Communications Business. “As a pioneer and industry leader in the foldable category, we're proud to build on our legacy of innovation with the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3. These devices equip consumers with technologies that unlock new ways to maximize and enjoy every moment with an ecosystem built on openness and innovation.”
Samsung also launched its smallest and lightest ear-buds, yet, the Galaxy Bud2. They incorporate a new machine learning-based solution that filters out a variety of distracting background noises. The Galaxy Bud2 will retail for $149.99.
