LG Uplus launches new IPTV service for senior users

LG Uplus launched new internet protocol television (IPTV) service to offer tailored information such as health and tourism information to users over 50 years old, the telecom firm said Tuesday.

The service, “U+tv Bravo Life,” offers health programs jointly created by the mobile carrier and Seoul National University Hospital. The user-friendly interface also offers various categories including tourism and hobbies.

“We launched the new IPTV service for active senior citizens who want to learn and enjoy things after retirement,” said Lee Geon-yeong, a vice president who heads the home and media product unit at LG Uplus, during a media briefing held in Seoul.

“We will continue to work hard to offer new IPTV services, useful information and a variety of fun activities to users in different age groups.”

Before launching the new service, the mobile carrier surveyed users in their 50s and 60s to better reflect their needs. The survey showed that users over 50 expressed an active attitude toward life after retirement, the firm said.

Some respondents said there were no reliable health programs, while others said most variety shows these days are oriented towards the younger generation.

U+tv Bravo Life offers 158 self-production programs that are tailored to tastes of users over 50, the company said, noting that medical staff at Seoul National University Hospital participated in producing 90 programs focused on health information.

Through the programs, users can listen at home to in-depth explanations about health from medical specialists.

Nine programs show successful cases of others who found second jobs after retirement. These jobs include baristas and calligraphers. The programs also offer topics such as initial investment to establish a business.

Other programs offer useful information on how to use high-tech smartphones, how to utilize Google Map and how to book flight tickets through Skyscanner.
