TmaxOS, an affiliate of Korea's corporate software maker TmaxSoft, unveiled its own computer operating system (OS) Tuesday.

Offering a bundled deal that includes office software package TmaxOffice and web browser ToGate, TmaxOS said it will push into the country's business-to-business (B2B) software market currently dominated by Microsoft (MS).

The company said its operating system acquired a Good Software (GS) certification from the state-run Telecommunications Technology Association last month.

Given the software is competitive in functionality, usability and maintainability, the GS certification stands as quality assurance. A product with GS certification may gain benefits of preferential purchase from government agencies. The company said this is the first time for a local software company to obtain this certification.

“The GS certification for TmaxOS could pave way for us to join the market,” TmaxOS CEO Park Hak-rae said. “As the country's sole computer OS developer, we will accelerate our market entry in the B2B software market.”

TmaxSoft has endeavored to develop its own computer OS during the past decade. In 2009, the company unveiled Tmax Window, but failed to attract public attention due to a lack of overall competitiveness. It also introduced a beta version of the TmaxOS in 2016, but was treated with disdain after the OS froze up during its unveiling.

The 2018 version was introduced two years after the 2016 debacle, and the outlook for the OS looks similar to that of MS Windows OS. Tmax said they enabled cross-platform compatibility so that TmaxOS users can still use software programs they used in Windows OS.

While competing with MS, TmaxOS also announced its plans to enter the enterprise cloud service market. TmaxOS also unveiled its own cloud service platform ProZone that was developed using its own Hi-5 Architecture.

The company said it will establish a cloud data center in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, by 2021 to become a player in the country's enterprise cloud service market, which is also dominated by overseas companies such as Amazon.
