Seoul Semiconductor, the nation’s leading light-emitting diode (LED) maker, says it has mass-produced new LED chips that have the world’s top luminous efficiency.
The company said Tuesday the Acrich LED package comes with 210 lumens per watt (Lm/W). The company’s patented multi-junction technology (MJT) has enabled the top-notch efficiency, strengthening its foothold in the high-end LED industry, the company said.
“The MJT is a key technology for the next-generation LED market,” Seoul Semiconductor chief technology officer Nam Ki-bum said. “We are going to achieve 220 Lm/W efficiency within this year, which the U.S. Department of Energy aims to achieve by 2020.”
The energy department predicted in its previous report that LED will take up about 40 percent of the country’s lighting market in 2020, with 88 percent of existing lighting systems replaced by LED in 2030.
The Acrich technology plays a central role in producing brighter and energy-efficient LED chips, as it helps reduce defect rates and improves lifespan, the company said.
Meanwhile, Seoul Semiconductor was the world’s fourth-largest LED maker in the third quarter of last year, according to U.S.-based market researcher IHS. The chip maker recorded a 6.3 percent market share during the period, up from 5.6 percent in the first quarter.
