A mother bear committed suicide after killing her baby in a farm in northwestern China. according to local daily Renminbao on Sunday.
A farm household has raised bears in small “Crush Cages” for bile.
The cage workers were trying to take bile from the baby bear by implanting a rubber hose into his body as usual. It is said that they even did not give him any anesthetic.
As soon as the baby screamed with his pain, its mother escaped a cage which confined her and then ran toward the baby bear. The scared bear farmers ran away as the bear approached them.
The mother bear, who failed to break the cage, suffocated her baby by hugging the it,” said one witness. After her baby was killed, the mother bear killed herself too, by smashing her head to the wall.
“The bear farmers should immediately stop collecting bile from bear’s gall bladder,” said a member of an environmental group, urging the authorities to crack down on such atrocities on animals.
