17 new pyramids discovered by satellite

Listen

An infra-red satellite image shows the sites of 17 lost pyramids as well as thousands of tombs and settlements, BBC News reported Wednesday.

Dr. Sarah Parcack and her research team at the University of Alabama reported to BBC the discovery of 17 lost pyramids, 1,000 ancient tombs and more than 3,000 ancient settlements in Egypt.

Parcack studied the infra-red satellite images provided by the NASA for over a year before officially finding the new pyramids. The cameras attached to the satellites are designed to take sharp images of objects that are less than one meter in diameter on Earth. They also function similarly to CT scans or X-rays, differentiating objects beneath the surface.

“These are just the sites close to the surface. There are many thousands of additional sites that the Nile has covered over with silt. This is just the beginning of this kind of work,” said Parcack on BBC.

Infra-red satellite allows researchers to see the outlines of ancient underground structures invisible to the human eye by distinguishing different density and temperature of the mud bricks used by Egyptians and the sand and soil. This technology is also applied in many fields such as military action, underground expeditions, and studies of natural resources.

The broadening usage of the improved technology will further engage young scientists and students in science. It is a new advance in archaeology, which will benefit greatly in revealing the lost civilizations of the past.

Parack is determined to continue her search for Egyptian artifacts. Her work will be featured in the BBC documentary, "Egypt’s Lost Cities," on May 30, focusing on the banks of the Nile River.
