1st homosexual caveman found in Czech Republic

Archaeologists have unearthed the 5,000-year-old remains of what they believe may have been the world's oldest known gay caveman, the British Telegraph newspaper reported on its website, Thursday.

The male body ― said to date back to between 2900-2500 B.C. ― was discovered buried in a way normally reserved only for women of the Corded Ware culture in the Copper Age, the report said.

The skeleton was found in a Prague suburb in the Czech Republic with its head pointing eastwards and surrounded by domestic jugs, rituals only previously seen in female graves.

"From history and ethnology, we know that people from this period took funeral rites very seriously so it is highly unlikely that this positioning was a mistake," said lead archaeologist Kamila Remisova Vesinova.

"Far more likely is that he was a man with a different sexual orientation, homosexual or transsexual," she added.

According to Corded Ware culture which began in the late Stone Age and culminated in the Bronze Age, men were traditionally buried lying on their right side with their heads pointing towards the west, and women on their left sides with their heads pointing towards the east. Both sexes would be put into a crouching position, the newspaper said.

The men would be buried alongside weapons, hammers and flint knives as well as several portions of food and drink to accompany them to the other side.

Women would be buried with necklaces made from teeth, pets, and copper earrings, as well as jugs and an egg-shaped pot placed near the feet.

기원전 2900-2500년경 한 남성 무덤을 조사한 결과 매장 방식이 이 지역이 속한 줄무늬토기문화권의 여성 매장 방식과 일치하는 것으로 나타났다고 이 보도는 전했다.

체코 프라하 교외에서 발견된 발견된 남성 무덤의 유골은 머리를 동쪽을 향하고 가정용 주전자들로 둘러 싸여져 있었는데 이는 이전에 여성 매장 방식에서 볼 수 있었다.

책임연구자인 고고학자 카밀라 레미소바 베시노바는 "역사적•인종학적으로 볼 때, 이 시기 사람들은 장례의식을 매우 중요시했기 때문에 남자에게 여성 매장방식을 적용한 것은 실수가 아닐 가능성이 크다"고 말했다.

그는 "이 남자가 일반인들과는 다른 성적 지향, 즉 동성애자 또는 성전환자였을 가능성이 매우 크다"고 덧붙였다고 이 보도가 전했다.

석기시대 말기에 시작돼 청동기시대에 꽃을 피운 유럽 줄무늬토기문화권의 무덤에서 남자는 전통적으로 머리를 서쪽으로 향하고 오른편으로 누워 웅크린 자세로, 여성은 머리를 동쪽으로 향하고 왼편으로 누워 웅크린 자세로 매장된다.

또 남자 시신 옆에는 무기, 망치 등과 함께 음식과 음료 등이 부장품으로 놓이지만, 여성은 동물 이빨 등으로 만든 목걸이와 구리 귀걸이 등과 함께 발 근처에 계란 모양 토기가 놓인다.
