Soviet Union lied about 1961 Yuri Gagarin space mission

A new book has revealed that scientists twice miscalculated where Yuri Gagarin would land, the British Telegraph newspaper reported Wednesday on its website.

Soviet officials lied about the success of Yuri Gagarin's historic 1961 flight into space and covered up the fact that he had landed more than 200 miles away from where they were expecting him, the book discloses.

The book, published on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's famous flight, reveals that scientists twice miscalculated where he would land which is why there was nobody there to meet him when he finally touched down some 500 miles south of Moscow.

"For many years, Soviet literature claimed that Yuri Gagarin and his Vostok landing capsule had come down in the area it was supposed to," says the book, titled “108 Minutes That Changed the World.”

The Soviets lied too about the manner of his landing, claiming that he had touched down inside the capsule itself when in actual fact he landed separately via parachute, the publication says.

The reason they lied, says the book, was to skirt strict rules that would have prevented them from officially registering the flight as a world record.

The book, by the Russian journalist Anton Pervushin, published a touching letter Gagarin wrote to his family before the mission in which he pondered his own mortality, telling his wife not to "die of grief" if he never returned.

Gagarin said he hoped that they would never have cause to read his words.

"But sometimes people slip on even ground and break their neck," he wrote. "Something could also happen here.”

His decision to pen a farewell letter was understandable, the Telegraph said, noting that in 1957, Soviet scientists had sent a stray dog called Laika into space only to see her die within hours from overheating.

Gagarin's wife finally got to read his emotional letter in 1968 after his tragic death at the age of just 34 in a mysterious plane crash.

소련 정부 관계자들은 1961년 가가린의 역사적인 우주비행이 성공한 것에 대해 거짓말을 했으며 가가린이 그들이 예상했던 것 보다 200마일이나 떨어진 곳에 착륙한 사실을 은폐했었다고 이 책은 밝혔다.

가가린의 우주비행 50주년 하루 전날 발간된 이 책은 가가린의 착륙지점이 두번씩 이나 잘못 계산됐으며 이것이 가가린이 모스크바에서 500마일이나 떨어진 곳에 착륙했을 때 그를 마중해 주는 사람이 아무도 없었던 이유라고 설명했다.

이 책은 또 가가린이 우주선 캡슐 안에 탄 채 착륙했다고 소련이 주장했지만, 사실은 캡슐과 분리돼 낙하산을 타고 착륙했다고 밝혔다.

‘세상을 바꾼 108분’이라 제목이 붙여진 이 책에 따르면 ‘오랫동안, 소련의 저서들은 유리 가가린이 착륙캡슐 보스톡과 함께 착륙이 예상되었던 지점에 내렸다고 주장했다’는 것.

가가린의 비행이 세계적인 공식 기록으로 인정받지 못할 것을 우려한 소련이 착륙 방법에 대해서도 거짓말을 했다고 이 책은 밝혔다.

러시아 언론인 안톤 페르부신이 쓴 이 책에는 가가린이 비행임무 전에 자신의 죽음을 생각하며 가족들에게 쓴 감동적인 편지도 게재돼 있다. 그는 아내에게 자신이 돌아오지 못하더라도 죽도록 슬퍼하지 않기를 바란다고 썼다.

그러면서도 가족들이 자신의 편지를 읽는 일이 없기를 바란다고 썼다.

그는 "사람들은 평평한 땅에서도 미끄러져 목이 부러지기도 한다. 여기서도 무언가 일어날 수 있다"고 썼다.

가가린이 가족들에게 작별 편지를 쓸 결심을 한 것은 당시 상황을 감안한 것으로 보인다고 이 신문은 분석했다. 1957년 소련 과학자들은 집 잃은 개 `라이카'를 우주로 보냈고 이 개는 태양열의 열선 등에 노출돼 몇시간 만에 숨졌다고 텔레그래프는 지적했다.

가가린의 아내는 그러나 1968년에 당시 34살이던 가가린은 의문스러운 비행기 추락사고로 짧은 생을 마친 후 그가 쓴 작별 편지를 읽게 된다.
