The secret behind chupacabra solved

The mysterious identity of the “blood-sucking monster” chupacabra has finally been solved, said an investigator working in Argentina.

“After five years of digging, I have uncovered the roots of the mystery,” revealed Benjamin Radford, a paranormal investigator and managing editor of Skeptical Inquirer magazine.

Tales of chupacabra, which means “goat blood-sucker” in Spanish, has spread mainly in Latin America for hundreds of years. Because of its weird appearance, it was rumored to be an alien, mutant animal or an extinct species.

However, Radford said it’s really only about 15 years old. It wasn’t until the summer of 1995, in Puerto Rico, that people started connecting the name “el chupacabra” with the fearsome four-legged creatures thought to prey on other animals.

When a witness shared her story of seeing this animal on “Cristina,” a Spanish-language equivalent of Oprah Winfrey’s show, it became an even bigger part of the global attraction. Also, even more sightings and findings of dead animals were brought to light in the mid-2000s.

However, DNA evidence has shown those to be dogs, foxes and coyotes with a contagious skin disease called sarcoptic mange that affects many dogs and results in hair-loss. In the magazine, Radford concludes that those with the skin disease and chupacabras are not the same.

“After studying the dead carcasses, there were no signs of blood sucking. It’s clear that severely disfigured animals, due to the skin disease, are to be blamed for causing the fear,” he said.

“They tend to be spotted in warmer climates because they die in colder weather. As a result, chupacabra is a monster created by the imagination of the people,” he claimed.

전설의 ‘흡혈괴물’ 추파카브라 정체는 바로…

라틴 아메리카와 미국 남부 지역에서 종종 목격되거나 사체로 발견되는 ‘흡혈 괴물’ 추파카브라의 정체가 최근 밝혀졌다고 아르헨티나에서 활동하는 조사관이 주장했다.

초 자연적 현상을 전문적으로 연구하는 벤자민 래드퍼드는 “지난 5년 동안 추파카브라의 행적을 쫓은 끝에 이 미스터리 괴물의 정체와 소문의 진상을 파악했다.”고 자신이 발간하는 월간잡지 ‘스켑티컬 인콰이어러’(Skeptical Inquirer magazine)에서 밝혔다.

추파카브라는 ‘염소의 피를 빨아먹는 자’라는 뜻을 가진 전설의 괴물로, 기괴한 생김새 때문에 그 정체를 두고 외계인•돌연변이•멸종된 동물설 등 각종 확인되지 않은 소문이 라틴 아메리카를 중심으로 수백 년 째 내려오고 있다.

하지만 래드퍼드에 따르면 ‘추파카브라’의 소문이 시작된 건 불과 15년 전. 1995년 여름 푸에르토리코에서 몸에 털이 없고 네발달린 동물이 피를 빨아 가축들을 잡아먹는다고 한 가정주부가 지역뉴스에서 인터뷰를 하면서 흡혈괴물의 공포는 최초로 시작됐다.

이후 이 내용이 미국의 유명토크쇼인 ‘오프라 윈프리쇼’에서 재조명되자 전 세계적인 관심을 불러일으켰다. 또 2000년 대 중반부터는 구체적인 목격담과 추파카브라로 추정되는 사체들이 발견됐는데 여기에는 공통점이 있었다.

DNA검사결과 대부분 털 빠진 코요테, 여우, 개 등 네발달린 동물이었던 것. 게다가 이들에게는 ‘흡윤개선’이란 진드기성 피부병을 앓고 있었던 것. 잡지에서 래드퍼드는 추파카브라는 괴물이 아니라고 결론지었다.

래드퍼드는 “사체를 검사한 결과 흡혈한 흔적이 전혀 없었던 점으로 미뤄 심한 피부병으로 생김새가 흉측해진 동물들이 건강이 좋지 않아지자 농가로 내려와 공포를 줬을 것”으로 추측했다.

래드퍼드는 “추파카브라는 흡혈괴물이 아닌 사람들의 상상력이 만들어낸 환상”이라고 주장하면서 “라틴 아메리카와 미국 남부 등 따뜻한 지역에서 자주 발병하는 피부병 때문에 일어난 해프닝”이라고 설명했다.
