8 ancient Wari graves found in Peru

Graves containing gold and silver artifacts have been discovered in Peru, apparently from the Wari Civilization, a report said.

The graves are located at the site of the ancient city of Espiritu Pampa in the southern Peruvian region of Cuzco, said the Peru National Culture Institute Thursday.

It is believed that the site served as the center of the ancient Wari. Eight bodies were discovered, apparently those of Wari aristocrats and their attendants.

The graves consist of bodies and artifacts which were placed in the earth and covered with smooth stones. Underneath the stones were breastplates and armbands, as well as batons made of gold and silver.

The institute said that whereas the 1987 discovery yielded items which were precious enough to be snapped up as soon as they were placed on the market, this discovery could be significant enough to have them alter their historical understanding of the Incas, whose civilization came after the Waris'

Meanwhile, local media reported the discovery of gold jewelry, crockery, and pieces of fabric, which have been perfectly preserved. The Wari culture existed from A.D. 600 to 1200 in and around the Andes Mountains. It was centered around modern-day Cuzco, Peru.

24일(현지시간) 페루국립문화원에 따르면 무덤이 발견된 곳은 남부 쿠스코 지방의 에스피리투 팜파라는 옛 고대도시 자리다. 와리문명시대 의식이 집행됐던 곳으로 추정되는 곳이다. 당시 최고 지도층의의 것으로 보이는 무덤과 함께 측근들로 추정되는 사람 8명의 무덤이 무더기로 발견됐다고 언론 보도가 전했다.

무덤은 땅을 판 후 시신과 유물을 묻고 평평한 돌을 덮은 형태였다. 돌을 들어올린 곳에선 가슴받이와 완장, 금과 은으로 만든 지휘봉 등이 나왔다.

문화원 관계자는 “지난 1987년 발견된 시판의 무덤에 버금갈 정도로 귀중한 가치를 갖고 있다.” 면서 “이번에 발견된 무덤과 유물을 분석하다 보면 (와리문명 후 발전한) 잉카제국의 역사를 부분적으로 바꾸어야 할지도 모른다.”고 말했다.

한편 현지 언론은 “무덤에선 금으로 만든 장신구와 그릇, 직물 조각 등이 완벽한 상태로 발견됐다”고 보도했다. 와리문명은 A.D. 600-1200년 사이 안데스 산맥과 주변에서 왕성했던 문명이다. 지금의 페루 쿠스코 지방이 와리문명의 중심지였다.
