Newest Google gadget hits Korean shelves this week

Korea's stiff smartphone competition dominated by Apple and Samsung Electronics is expected to feature more of Google with the advent of the long-awaited Nexus S this week.

An official at the Korea Communications Commission said Sunday that the country’s wireless carriers had recently gained approval to sell the smartphone.

The nation's leading wireless operators SK Telecom and KT confirmed that they are poised to market the handset featuring the latest Google operating system (OS).

"We plan to start selling Google's advanced smartphone from this week at the earliest," SK Telecom spokeswoman Kim Ji-won said. SK Telecom is the No. 1 mobile carrier.

Spokesman Lee In-won at SK Telecom's cross-town rival KT also disclosed a similar plan. Both said that they recently finished compatibility tests for their networks and the Nexus S.

The model, which hit the overseas markets despite a delay here, is manufactured by Samsung but is called the "pure Google phone."

The device gained the moniker since it does not include any custom user interface or dedicated applications that either phone producer or carriers want.

Employing the latest Android OS, the handset could be comparable to the clean start-up screen of the world's foremost Internet search engine.

The Nexus S is the first phone that runs on Android's latest 2.3 mobile OS.

It has a 1-gigahertz mobile processor and a 4-inch organic liquid crystal display (LCD) with a light emitting diode (LED) as the backlight capacitive touch-sensitive screen.

The device allows customers to conduct mobile transactions and use video-linked services thanks to the applications' direct access to a camera.

Plus, it supports connectivity to next-generation networks, Wi-Fi, and has 16 gigabytes of internal storage and a global positioning system, according to the phone producer Samsung.

The policies of SK Telecom and KT contrast to their hitherto stance _ they came under fire for delaying the release of the handset for more than two months due to conflicts with Google in terms of customization and marketing as reported by The Korea Times (see page 18 on the Dec. 31 edition).

Kim at SK Telecom, however, declined to comment whether or not the top carrier accepted all requirements by Google.

Lee of KT also remained silent with regard to the thorny issue.

Another springboard for KT

The debut of the Nexus S is also expected to play a pivotal role for KT to mend fences with Samsung with the former's trial launch of Samsung's Galaxy 2.

"Talks are under way with Samsung to introduce the new Galaxy S, although nothing has been decided yet. But one thing that I want to make clear is the Nexus S is creating positive relations with Samsung," said a top-ranking KT executive, asking not to be identified.

In a seemingly retaliatory action against KT’s decision to introduce Apple’s iPhone to the local market in late 2009, Samsung only provided its strategic Galaxy S smartphone to KT's rival SK Telecom, which has so far sold over 2.6 million phones since the June 2010 launch.

KT received Samsung's less-specified Galaxy K model last October. Merely 120,000 Galaxy Ks were sold, according to KT officials.

"We've learned that SK Telecom will release the Galaxy S2 beginning this April. Furthermore, SK is in talks with Apple to introduce Apple’s next iPhone ― the iPhone 5. KT will respond," the KT executive said.

삼성전자와 구글의 첫 합작품인 `넥서스S’가 이번주 국내에 출시된다.

`넥서스S’는 구글의 최신 모바일 운영체제(OS) 2.3버전인 진저브래드(Gingerbread)를 세계 최초로 탑재한 레퍼런스 모델이다.

안드로이드 2.2버전인 프로요 (froyo) 대비 부팅 시간을 두 배 이상 단축시켰고 고화질 동영상 재생 등 처리 속도를 크게 개선한 것이 특징.

SK텔레콤 홍보실 김지원 매니저는 20일 ``빠르면 이번주 중으로 넥서스S를 출시할 예정’’이라고 밝혔다.

KT 홍보실의 이인원 차장 역시 ``넥서스S 출시가 확정됐다’’며 ``역시 빠르면 이번주 내 출시할 것’’이라고 말했다.

`넥서스S’는 슈퍼 AMOLED(능동형유기발광다이오드)를 채택해 보다 선명한 화질을 제공하며 통화시 얼굴 표면과 자연스럽게 접촉되도록 전면 강화유리의 위.아래면을 곡면으로 구현한 커브드 글래스 디자인을 채용했다.

뿐만 아니라 근거리 무선통신 (NFC)를 지원해 모바일 결재가 가능하며 500만 화소 카메라등을 갖추고 있다.

`넥서스S’의 출시가 국내 스마트폰 시장 판도에 어떤 영향을 미칠지 의견이 분분한 가운데, 업계에서는 KT와 삼성전자의 `밀월관계’ 관계가 급격히 빨라질 것으로 내다 보고 있다.

익명을 요구한 KT의 한 고위관계자는 ``갤럭시S2의 출시 가능성이 커진 것은 사실’’이라며 ``삼성전자와의 관계가 상당히 좋아졌으나 갤럭시S 차기 모델 출시 시점에 대해서는 현재까지 결정된 바 없다’’고 말했다.

애플의 아이폰 독점 출시로 삼성전자와의 관계가 크게 소원해졌던 KT는 빠른 `갤럭시S2’ 출시로 SK텔레콤과의 단말기 확보 경쟁에 적극적으로 맞서겠다는 계획이다.

가입자가 급성장하고 있는 국내 스마트폰 시장은 소위 `선점효과’가 매우 중요하다.

지난해 6월말 SK텔레콤은 삼성전자의 `갤럭시S’를 단독으로 도입, 260만대 이상을 팔아치웠다. 그러나 KT는 이보다 4개월여가 늦은 10월, 사양까지 낮은 `갤럭시K’를 공급받아 겨우 12만여대(추정치)를 파는데 그쳤다.

이 KT관계자는 ``SK텔레콤이 이르면 4월 갤럭시S2를 출시하고 애플과 아이폰5를 출시하는 방안을 협의중인 것으로 안다’’며 ``이에 적극 대응할 것’’이라고 말했다.
