As households continue to shrink, home appliance makers are redesigning products for increasingly compact living spaces, with Coway introducing a small-format food waste processor aimed at single and two-person households.
According to the Ministry of Data and Statistics, single-person households topped 8 million for the first time in 2024, accounting for 36.1 percent of all households, while the average household size is projected to fall to around 1.8 people by 2052.
This demographic shift is compressing kitchen spaces, fueling demand for compact and multifunctional appliances tailored to smaller households.
To address these changing needs, Coway recently launched its Zero food waste processor series.
The 2-liter model measures just 18.9 centimeters in width, making it one of the smallest food waste processors in Korea. It is compact enough to fit into narrow spaces alongside sinks, which is a key consideration in studio apartments where kitchen and living spaces are often integrated.
“The product reflects changes in household structures and kitchen environments,” a company official said. “We plan to continue introducing products and services tailored to increasingly diverse consumer lifestyles.”
The product also targets behavioral shifts among single to two-person households, where food waste tends to accumulate over several days. Its storage mode preserves waste for up to seven days, using daily high-temperature cycles to reduce odor and bacterial growth before automatically switching to dehydration and grinding.
Noise reduction is another design priority. The unit operates at an average of 18.7 decibels in storage mode, aiming to minimize disruption in small living environments.
Maintenance features also reflect changing user expectations. The appliance includes a high-temperature self-cleaning function for the drying compartment and detachable air ducts for separate washing. Ultraviolet C sterilization in the air duct removes 99.9 percent of bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella, according to the company.
For rental users, Coway offers consumables such as deodorizing filters through a scheduled delivery service. The ceramic-coated drying container, a core component used for grinding food waste, is eligible for one free replacement during the rental period.
The product is eligible for government subsidies aimed at reducing food waste, allowing consumers who purchase the product to receive partial reimbursement depending on local government policies.
