Hyundai Motor, Audi and BYD are redirecting their strategic focus on electric sedans to achieve balanced sales growth with their SUV lineups.
The three carmakers recently introduced flagship all-electric models in Korea, hoping to capture local demand for quality sedans.
Last month, Hyundai Motor unveiled the freshly redesigned IONIQ 6 electric vehicle (EV) for the Korean market. The upgraded model came in almost three years after the vehicle debuted in September 2022. The IONIQ 6 is one of the carmaker’s flagship EV models, along with the IONIQ 5 compact SUV.
The new IONIQ 6 has clear upsides compared with other electric sedans, as the vehicle is capable of traveling up to 562 kilometers on a single charge — the highest among EVs available in Korea.
Given local customers’ strong preference for longer-range EVs, the vehicle holds a strong competitive edge in the non-premium EV sedan market.
The vehicle is available for less than 50 million won ($35,700), making it an outstanding competitor for imported premium EVs, whose prices are generally higher even with less driving range than the IONIQ 6.

Audi Korea is seeking to extend its strong sales performance with the recent launch of the flagship A6 e-tron electric sedan. The carmaker suffered years of sluggish sales performance largely due to a lack of new vehicles, but is now on track to achieve a major rebound on solid sales of its Q4 e-tron electric SUV.
The carmaker is pinning its hopes on the all-electric version of the firm’s flagship mid-sized sedan to help restore its former prominence in the Korean market. The A6 e-tron is capable of driving up to 469 kilometers on a single charge, and can accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in only 5.4 seconds.
Audi Korea sold a total of 4,910 vehicles in the first half of this year, up 36.3 percent from a year earlier, based on strong sales of the electric Q4 SUV.
“Even if demand for electric SUVs remains higher than sedans, the launch of the A6 e-tron will help the carmaker to expand its market share, as the vehicle is undoubtedly one of the carmaker’s most influential flagship sedans,” an official from the industry said.

Along with Hyundai Motor and Audi Korea, BYD is also joining the race for the nation’s electric sedan market with its Seal electric sports sedan.
The company started delivery of the vehicle to local customers on Wednesday. The Seal is the second model BYD Korea has introduced following its brand debut in January with the launch of the Atto 3 compact electric SUV.
BYD Seal is already globally recognized for its performance and competitive price. Given that the positive response to the Atto 3 in its first few months, the Chinese carmaker’s electric sedan may pose a threat to its rivals.
Customers can purchase the vehicle for around 40 million won after subsidies.
The Seal offers a strong driving performance and is capable of reaching 100 kilometers per hour from zero in just 3.8 seconds.
