POSCO TJ Park Foundation has invited a group of young students in Asian countries to Korea, as part of its scholarship program to fulfill its corporate social responsibility, the foundation said Thursday.
The foundation held a three-day workshop with 18 students from across Asia and 50 Korean students.
Those who study science and engineering in Asian countries can apply for the POSCO Asia Fellowship scholarship program. This year, 18 international students won scholarships worth 1.3 billion won ($973,000).
Under the program, recipients will also have the opportunity to learn about Korean society, culture and economy. Launched in 2005, the POSCO Asia Fellowship has awarded scholarships to over 530 students from 33 countries.
Additionally, fellowship winners are given the chance to take Korean language courses to help them adapt to the culture quickly and easily during their stay.
The foundation also helps support the academic pursuits of domestic students by selecting a group of college students based in Gwangyang and Pohang for its POSCO Vision Scholarship. The two cities are home to POSCO's steelmaking business.
The beneficiaries receive combined benefits worth 800 million won annually.
Since its inception in 2006, 636 students have received the scholarship.
The winners also visit other countries during breaks to experience foreign cultures. The program also offers mentoring resources for them to get a better understanding of their career path.
All the scholarship winners were invited for the workshop which came to an end Thursday.
"We expect all the students to build a positive relationship with one another," POSCO TJ Park Foundation Chairman Kim Sun-uk said. "The foundation will keep supporting their journey to achieve dreams."
The foundation also pledged to cast a positive social influence by launching more diverse scholarship programs for students here and abroad.
