LG Group’s business-to-consumer (B2C) units are expected to launch a huge discount event to celebrate the LG Twins’ Korean Series championship victory, according to LG, Tuesday.

On Monday, LG Twins clinched the championship title for the first time in 29 years after defeating the KT Wiz 6-2 in Game 5 of the Korea Series in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) League. The Seoul-based LG Twins won the championship in their inaugural year in 1990 and again in 1994, but it took them 29 years to win a third title.

LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo was also on site to celebrate the team’s long-awaited championship. To show his support for the team, the chairman, who has not been a regular at baseball games, attended Game 1, Game 4, and Game 5 of the Korea Series.

After the game, the players gave the chairman a victory toss. At the awards ceremony, the chairman shouted, "To the world-class, invincible LG Twins fans, the LG Twins have finally won the championship after 29 years."

After taking in the raucus cheers of fans, he added, "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the LG fans who have waited for so long, cheered for us, and loved us. I would also like to thank and congratulate our proud players and staff for giving us the best moments."

The final game of the Korean Series was sold out and the broadcast racked up a viewership rating of 8.1 percent, showing how much interest the championship match drew.

To commemorate the achievement, LG Group subsidiaries, including LG Electronics, LG Household & Health Care (H&H), and LG Uplus, are all discussing the scale, duration and extent of customer discount promotions, according to LG Group.

The late chairman bought the luxury watch in 1998, saying “if the Twins win the Korea Series, give this watch to the MVP of the series.” This time, LG Twins’ captain and shortstop Oh Ji-hwan was named the MVP after hitting three homers and eight RBIs during the series. It is highly likely that LG Electronics will hold a discount event for home appliances, LG H&H will cut the prices of its household products and cosmetics and LG Uplus will offer free calls and text messages.

Prior to the Korean Series, LG Electronics announced that it would provide membership points to all customers who purchased recommended products on its website if the Twins won the championship.

"We are considering holding a discount event to express our gratitude to fans for the LG Twins' championship victory. The specific timing and scale have not yet been decided,” a spokesperson for LG Electronics said.

Traditionally, conglomerates have offered large discount events for customers when their baseball teams won the Korean Series.

In 2014, when the Samsung Lions won the Korean Series, Samsung Electronics held an event offering up to 1.11 million won ($835) in discounts on TVs.

When the Kia Tigers won the title in 2017, the automaker sold the Morning, Ray and K-series cars at a maximum discount of 12 percent to the first 11,000 customers. Last year when SSG Landers won the championship, Shinsegae Group held a large-scale discount event called SSG Sale in which 19 subsidiaries, including Shinsegae Department Store, E-mart 24 and Shinsegae Duty Free, participated.
