Daewoo E&C is actively engaged in charitable activities overseas, demonstrating its commitment to giving back to local communities.
The nation’s fifth-largest builder donated $160,000 last month to build an education center for children with UNICEF near Al Faw Grand Port in Basrah, Iraq, it said in a statement. It was the second part of the builder's three-year donation package worth $500,000 under a memorandum of understanding signed with UNICEF last year.
It is the latest of the company's outreach projects for overseas communities. In January, Daewoo E&C also donated 180 million won ($133,000) to build an education center offering training in welding and scaffolding in Nigeria.
“The social outreach projects in Iraq and Nigeria aren’t just a one-time donation event,” a Daewoo E&C official said. “Our outreach projects aim to help them stand on their own feet through education.”
The builder also extends medical support to people living in remote regions. Under its “Vision Care” project, its overseas ophthalmic clinic service, it donated 61 million won last year to help 613 patients in Nigeria and 320 in Vietnam.
In addition, it donated recycled timbers to a local community near the Duqm Refinery construction site in Oman.
Daewoo E&C Chairman Jung Won-ju has stressed the importance of addressing local communities' needs, the company official said.
The builder has also initiated social outreach projects in countries where it has yet to begin construction.
It donated $500,000 recently to help victims of Cyclone Daniel in Derna, a northeastern Libyan town near Benghazi, where more than 10,000 people were killed and about 100,000 missing. In February, it contributed 100 million won to support the Korean Red Cross’ mission to help quake victims in Turkey.
