Daewoo E&C employees volunteer to help neighbors in need

Daewoo Engineering & Construction (E&C) employees have been performing volunteer activities to help people who need support and care, the firm said Wednesday.
The construction firm said its employees have visited people living in dilapidated houses in Seoul every year to carry out repair work. From changing a kitchen sink to repapering or repainting walls, they have provided various kinds of support for the needy.
“Daewoo E&C employees began carrying out volunteer activities after a group of employees provided assistance and delivered daily necessities to low-income disabled residents in Yongsan, central Seoul, March 14, 2012,” a company official said. “Since then, more than 2,000 employees have performed volunteer activities over 100 times.”
The latest activity came May 11 as 150 employees and their family members delivered a “healthy hope box” to 360 underprivileged households in Seoul.
“Each box contains six kinds of grains. We prepared the boxes with the hope that they can enjoy healthier meals,” the company official said.
The firm has also been collecting coins to raise money since 2006. This is one of the oldest donation programs the firm has implemented. Thus far, the firm has raised 170 million won ($142,265) and donated the money to social welfare organizations such as the Holt Ilsan Center, a childcare center operated by Holt Children's Services, and Table Community and Yeontan Bank, nonprofit organizations that provide charcoal briquettes to the needy.
“Daewoo E&C have been actively engaged in corporate social responsibility activities. In cooperating with the Beautiful Store Foundation, a nonprofit organization that operates charity shops, we have held bazaars,” the company said. Employees donated old garments, books and daily necessities and sold them at the bazaar. The profits earned on the sale of these items were donated to local social welfare organizations.”
The volunteer activities of Daewoo E&C employees also takes place at the end the year.
Since 2011, employees have delivered charcoal briquettes to underprivileged households. They have also made kimchi in the firm's dining hall and delivered it to child welfare facilities in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, since 2015.
