Doosan Group honorary chairman dies at 87

Late Doosan Group Honorary Chairman Park Yong-gon

Doosan Group Honorary Chairman Park Yong-gon died of old age, according to Doosan Group Monday. He was 87.

Park was born in 1932, the first son of Doosan Group's founder Park Too-pyong and began his career as a banker at Korea Development Bank.

After joining Oriental Brewery in 1963, he served as head of Doosan Industries and other key units of the group, and became the chairman in 1981.

Under his leadership, Doosan in 1995 streamlined its businesses and cut the number of units from 33 to 20, ending up with the current base of Doosan Group whose main portfolio is now construction and heavy industries.

Park studied business administration at Washington University.

Park is survived by two sons ― Doosan Group Chairman Park Jeong-won and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Chairman Park Gee-won ― and daughter ― Doosan Magazine Vice Chairwoman Park Hye-won.

The funeral will be held at Seoul National University Hospital in Seoul until Thursday.
