POSCO Engineering & Construction (E&C) is offering a construction forum as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity, under which middle school students in the Incheon area can learn about construction.

POSCO E&C developed the forum program with Incheon Metropolitan Government and its education office for four months to recruit a total of 1,000 students from 29 middle schools in Incheon for the program that operates between Sept. 22 and Dec. 12.

A POSCO E&C official said that the forum is expected to help students understand the nation’s construction industry in general and its economic impact such as job creation and revitalization of the local economy.

Participating students will also gain basic knowledge about construction, and have on-site tours to meet the company’s field workers.

Sixty-six Seogot Middle School students participated in the company’s first forum, Sept. 22. Under the program, they learn basic knowledge about construction from the company’s experts.

“I learned that construction requires highly sensitive cutting-edge technologies. I want to keep learning more about construction,” a student said.

The so-called “mentoring education” consists of 100 company workers and college volunteers, offering various classes related to construction such as plant and civic engineering for the area’s 18 middle schools.

In a bid to boost student interest in construction, the forum also provides an on-site tour where students visit newly built buildings in the Songdo area to learn about architectural techniques.

The forum program also offers a contest exhibition where students can make and exhibit miniature models of future buildings.

A POSCO E&C official said the company will develop similar CSR programs as its part of developing young talent in construction.
