Dongbu Daewoo Electronics has launched a compact refrigerator aimed at single-person households.

The electronics maker said Thursday the new model was designed for those who want a small, multipurpose fridge that can be used as a freezer and kimchi, or vegetable, refrigerator.

The move is part of the company’s strategy to grab the lion’s share in the small fridge market, which it says is a key growth area because single-person households are on the rise.

“As the single life is becoming prevalent across the nation, we believe the multipurpose refrigerator, guaranteeing exceptional space efficiency, will be the driving force to lead the global fridge market,” a Dongbu Daewoo spokesman said.

The company said the fridge is an upgraded version of a previous model that has gained nationwide popularity since it was released in 2013. It said the fridge has sold more than 1,000 units a month, with total sales exceeding 20,000.

The new model offers 102 liters of storage, which the company believes is ideal for a one-person household.

Dongbu Daewoo said the fridge uses only 50 percent of the energy of the previous model and has received the highest energy efficiency rating from the Korea Energy Agency.
