Ssangyong Engineering & Construction (E&C), a major Korean builder specializing in the construction of high-rises, won the most awards overseas among local builders in 2012 for its state-of-the-art designs, engineering and construction techniques.

According to the International Contractors Association of Korea (ICAK), Ssangyong was awarded eight prizes in four countries last year. The firm won one in Singapore for the construction of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel and received the others in the United States, Britain and Germany.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction, which secured the most building orders abroad last year, picked up a total of four awards in Singapore and Britain.

``Ssangyong and other local builders won a number of prizes in foreign countries, confirming their global competitiveness,’’ an ICAK official said. ``We expect they will pick up more awards this year and beyond.’’

A Ssangyong E&C spokesman said the company will continue to hone its design, engineering and construction capabilities to further solidify its status as one of the world’s top construction firms.
