Korea and the United Nations body tasked with promoting industrialization in developing nations agreed Thursday to closely work together to help the nations achieve industrial development and expand the use of alternative energy, officials said.
The agreement was reached after a meeting between South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan and Kandeh Yumkella, director-general of the U.N. Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) on the subject in Seoul, ministry officials said.
Under the agreement, the ministry and UNIDO will "expand and deepen the cooperation between the two organizations in helping developing countries achieve industrial development and green growth," a ministry official said.
The two organizations also plan to hold policy consultations on a regular basis and seek out joint projects and review their progress, the official said on the condition of anonymity.
UNIDO's main objective is aimed at promoting and accelerating industrial development in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. (Yonhap)
