Samsung SDI, a Korean manufacturer of rechargeable batteries and plasma displays, said Friday its first-quarter earnings surged 42.3 percent from a year earlier on strong market demand for key products.

Net profit totaled 112 billion won ($98.7 million) in the January-March period, compared with 78.7 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Sales also gained 13.9 percent on-year to 1.37 trillion won in the cited period and operating profit moved up 11.1 percent to 67 billion won, it added.

The company said solid quarterly earnings came as global demand for high capacity batteries used in tablet PCs and smartphones increased,

Demand for plasma display panels in Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East helped boost the bottom line, it added. (Yonhap)
