Korea's traditional makgeolli rice wine has been found to have potent anti-cancer properties that are 10-25 times greater than beer and grape wine, a state-run laboratory said Thursday.
The Korea Food Research Institute (KFRI) said it detected 150-500 parts per billion (ppb) of farnesol in samples of makgeolli sold on the market, much higher than the 15-20 ppb of the natural organic compound found in laboratory tests conducted on beer and wine.
Farnesol is a compound that has been proven to have anti-tumor, chemopreventive and anti-microbial characteristics. It is used to make perfumes and hygiene products.
Tests have shown that even a small amount inhaled as an aerosol is effective in fighting lung cancer and other cancerous growths.
"The discovery was made possible by using a magnet coated with nanoparticles specially designed to pick out farnesol on contact," said Ha Jae-ho, who led the KFRI research. "In a few cases, the concentration levels of farnesol in makgeolli reached 50 times that of other alcoholic beverages checked."
The research will be expanded to search for other helpful substances in the traditional beverage that has become popular in South Korea in recent years.
Ha said the use of the specially developed magnet has been submitted to the international "Journal of Chromatography A" for publication. (Yonhap)
