Stock billionaires in South Korea

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee held $7.58 billion worth of listed local shares as of Friday, the largest amount among local stock holders, according to a survey conducted by Chaebul.com.

Lee's stock holdings include a 20.8 percent stake in Samsung Life Insurance, which is valued at $4.03 billion, and a 3.4 percent interest in the country’s biggest firm by market capitalization, Samsung Electronics, worth $3.44 billion, according to the website which provides information on local conglomerates.

Chung Mong-koo, chairman of Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, ranked second with $4.76 billion, followed by Rep. Chung Mong-joon, the biggest shareholder in shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries with $1.98 billion; SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won with $1.74 billion; and Chung Eui-sun, a vice chairman of Hyundai Motor and the son of the Hyundai auto group, with $1.64 billion, the survey said.

The website named 979 shareholders as stock market millionaires, having shares worth over $1 million each. Of them, 864 or 88.3 percent were male, said the survey of shares of 1,781 companies traded on the country's main index KOSPI and the secondary tech-laced KOSDAQ.
