PARIS _ South Korea won a bid on Monday to host an international exposition in its southern coastal city of Yeosu in 2012, beating Tangiers of Morocco and Wroclaw of Poland.
During the voting at the 142nd General Assembly of the Paris-based Bureau of International Exposition (BIE) which selects the host city for the internationally recognized exposition, South Korea obtained a majority, securing 77 votes in the second round. Tangiers earned 63.
In the initial round, Yeosu got 68 votes, Tangiers 59 votes and Wroclaw 13. Wroclaw was
eliminated as it got the smallest number of votes among the three. To win the host rights for the world's event, any city has to win two thirds or more _ than 95 or more _ of votes in the first round.
Yoesu has succeeded in its second attempt in hosting the Expo. It was beaten in the bid to host the 2010 Expo by Shanghai five years ago by nearly double ballots.
