Bush, Congress Set Social, Environmental Standards

The United States is likely to demand renegotiations in the free trade agreement (FTA) with South Korea so as to have some provisions on its labor and environmental standards reflected. Seoul, however, is maintaining its position that there will be no renegotiations, according to officials on Friday.

``We heard that the United States would apply the new standards to its free trade talks with Peru and Panama first. But the U.S. has not yet made any official suggestion to us,’’ said Lee Hye-min, the chief planner of the South Korea-U.S. FTA at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
