World to suffer from surplus of tablet computers in 2011

JP Morgan has warned again of the possibility of the global market suffering from a surplus of tablet computers in the second half of this year.

A report written by analyst Mark Moskowitz, which was released Wednesday, says that up to 40 percent of the total tablet computers produced this year will remain unsold, an indication that fast growing production could create a “bubble.”

The report says that an estimated 81 million tablet computers will be produced across the globe this year. Of them, 47.9 million or 60 percent will be sold out, and the remaining 40 percent will remain unsold, it says.

Even if production decreases by 20 percent, the global market will suffer from an oversupply of 36 percent, the report says.

On Wednesday, Apple issued an e-mail announcement that iPad 2 will be made available for U.S. customers beginning 5 p.m. on Friday (local time).

Many market watchers call 2011 the “year of tablet computers” as much more new products will hit stores.

Motorola plans to release a new 3G Mobility model late this month, while Samsung will roll out a new Galaxy Tab thereafter. Research In Motion, producer of BlackBerry, is scheduled to release a new Playbook in late March at the earliest.

‘태블릿 공급과잉… 올해 40% 재고로 남아돌 것’

JP모간이 올 하반기 태블릿 공급과잉 가능성을 거듭 경고한 것으로 알려졌다.

9일(현지시간) JP모건 마크 모스코비츠는 보고서를 통해 올해 생산된 태블릿 중 최대 40%가 팔리지 않고 재고로 남을 수 있다는 파격적 전망을 제시했다. 올해 태블릿 공급이 기하급수적으로 늘면서 ‘거품’현상을 빚을 것이란 얘기다.

이 보고서는 애플을 포함, 전체 가전업체가 계획하고 있는 올해 태블릿 생산물량을 8,100만대로 추산했다. 이에 비해 올해 소비자에게 판매가능 물량으로 4,790만대로 추산, 생산액의 최대 40%가 재고로 남아돌 것이라고 분석했다.

심지어 생산이 예상보다 20%가량 줄어든다고 해도 36% 가량 공급과잉을 비켜가기 힘들 것이라고 예상했다.

이날 애플은 미국 고객에게 아이패드2가 11일 오후 5시부터 구입 가능하다는 이메일 안내문을 돌렸다.

이외에도 올해는 ‘태블릿의 해’라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 삼성을 비롯한 공급자들의 출시일정이 산더미처럼 쌓여있다.

가까이는 모토로라 모빌러티의 10인치/32기가바이트 3G 모델 줌이 2월말 출시되고 삼성전자 갤럭시탭 후속 모델도 나온다. 블랙베리를 만드는 리서치인모션의 태블릿 플레이북은 3월말-4월중 시판된다.
