Heavy rains battered Seoul overnight, triggering flood warnings and advisories for many areas and leading to the closure of a key road running along an eastern stream amid forecasts that more rain will fall, though no casualties have been reported yet.

Flood warnings and advisories were issued for Gangseo Ward, Eunpyeong Ward, Mapo Ward and Yangcheon Ward, while the wards of Eunpyeong and Dobong near high mountains issued preliminary mudslide warnings after the Korea Forest Service issued mudslide alerts for all of the Seoul metropolitan area.

Both directions of the Dongbu Expressway running along the Jungnang Stream in the eastern part of the city were entirely closed due to heaver-than-expected rains as of 5:37 a.m.

The Seoul city government said it has received 120 reports of rain-related damage and declared a Level 2 emergency response as of 3:40 a.m.

Heavy rain is forecast to continue through Sunday, with rainfall intensity to reach up to 300 mm per hour in some areas.

Officials said the city government plans to maintain an emergency response system and respond thoroughly to any further damage caused by the torrential downpours.
