Doosan Group, a Korean conglomerate, is ambitiously working on turning Chung-Ang University into a globally competitive school. Doosan took over Chung-Ang last May, spending some 120 billion won ($120 million) in its effort to make a bigger contribution to society through education.
``Chung-Ang has the potential to become a world-class university considering its competitive faculty groups and students. I will promote Chung-Ang with school professors and students as a world-renowned university,'' said Doosan Group Chairman Park Yong-sung, who is also chairman of the school board.
With the ambition, Park vowed to offer promotion and benefits to devoted faculty and staff for school development. Also, students will have more scholarship programs and libraries and dormitories as well as an upgraded R&D center. ``I will help students make excellent achievement in research and studies,'' Park said.
At the same time, Doosan is working forward to improve efficiency in school operations by introducing its management know-how and keeping the school's financial conditions transparent. For this, the conglomerate is working with a consulting agent.
Founded in Seoul in 1918, Chung-Ang is a leading private university in theater, film, design and liberal arts and some 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students are studying at the school.
Doosan comprises 15 subsidiaries spanning beverages, foods, heavy machinery and power plants. The group's total sales last year reached 18.6 trillion won.
