Sookmyung Women’s University has revoked the master’s degree of Kim Keon Hee, wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, citing plagiarism in her thesis.
The university announced Tuesday that its Graduate School Committee convened on Monday and decided to cancel Kim’s degree based on the findings of its Research Ethics Integrity Committee.
Kim received the degree in 1999 with a thesis titled “A Study on the Characteristics of Paul Klee’s Paintings.” The committee concluded the paper constituted plagiarism and recommended revocation last week.
Although Kim received the degree before the university introduced rules in 2015 allowing degree cancellations for academic misconduct, Sookmyung recently amended its academic regulations to apply the policy retroactively to degrees awarded prior to June 13, 2015.
“This decision was made to uphold research ethics and academic integrity,” the university said in a statement, adding that it will continue to fulfill its academic responsibilities.
