Law Prof. Named Head of Rights Commission

President Lee Myung-bak Thursday named Yang Gun, a law professor of Hanyang University in Seoul, as chairman of the Civil Rights Commission (CRC).

Born in Cheongjin, North Hangyeong Province now in North Korea, Yang, 61, served as an adviser to the Constitutional Court and president of the Korean Public Law Association. He also worked as vice chairman of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office's audit and inspection council, and policy adviser to the Unification Board, predecessor of the Ministry of Unification.

Under its initiative for a small but efficient government, the Lee administration merged three agencies, including the Korea Independent Commission Against Corruption, into the CRC.

Lee Chang-yong, an economics professor of Seoul National University, was appointed vice chairman of the Financial Services Commission.

The President also named Seo Dong-won, senior advisor at the legal services firm Kim & Chang, as vice chairman of the Fair Trade Commission.
