LG partners with Canadian startup to advance AI technology

LG Electronics will team up with Canada-based artificial intelligence (AI) software company Element AI to research and develop advanced AI technologies that can be applied to its home appliances and services, the tech company said Sunday.
The company said it will forge a strategic partnership with Element AI and hold an agreement ceremony at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, featuring its Chief Technology Officer I.P. Park and Element AI CEO Jean-Francois Gagne.
Based in Montreal, Gagne and Nicolas Chapados founded the software company in 2016 along with Yoshua Bengio, a professor at the University of Montreal and a leading expert on deep learning technology.

Since its foundation, the company has developed AI-powered software that can be used in many business sectors including finance, manufacturing, logistics and retail as well as government agencies.
“LG decided to cooperate with Element AI to develop a solution that can serve as a compass to guide the AI industry,” an LG official said. “With the joint research project, the two companies will develop various technologies that can be applied to products and services.”
LG CTO I.P. Park said the collaboration will offer its consumers and society enhanced value through the development of AI.
“We need a right direction to offer better value to consumers with AI technology,” Park said in a statement. In cooperation with Element AI, we will lead the development of AI in a systematic way.”
Gagne said the strategic partnership between the two companies will spur the development of the technology that will help people live smarter.
“I am so pleased to join the AI journey with LG Electronics. As trailblazers of the AI technology sector, LG and Element AI will create technology that puts consumer experience first,” the CEO said.
Park and Gagne will also attend LG's global press conference which will be held at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas on Jan. 6, to deliver speeches about the development of AI technology.
