P&G Korea works to minimize environmental impact, cooperate with NGOs and government

The effects of climate change already impact 85 percent of the world's population, according to a recent report by the Berlin-based Mercator Institute.

The report highlights the severity of climate change as an imminent global issue that needs to be addressed.

To counter climate change, diverse sectors of society, including governments, companies, nonprofit organizations and consumers are working in their respective sectors to maintain the planet sustainably.

Proctor & Gamble Korea is part of the movement and has implemented eco-friendly measures in its manufacturing and business procedures. It also engages in activities such as cooperating with environmental NGOs to enhance consumer awareness and encourage eco-friendly practices.

"To reduce the earth's temperature it is not only important for the company but individuals to take part in eco-friendly measures in their daily lives," a P&G Korea senior executive said. "P&G will support and engage in cooperation with local governments and related entities to aid in the efforts to educate consumers in acquiring eco-friendly habits to help prevent climate change."

As part of their efforts, P&G Korea teamed up with NAVER Happy Bean and launched the P&G Korea "Protect the earth lifestyle" campaign. While most previous efforts focused on reducing waste, the campaign aims to put into consideration the impact on the environment from all stages of the product lifecycle, from the supply of raw materials, to production, transportation and the usage and waste management stages.

P&G Korea has evaluated its brands, including Downy, Pampers and Head & Shoulders, and has been working to minimize the environmental impact in the development and production of products.

The campaign promoted eco-friendly lifestyles and provided opportunities for consumers to take part in the efforts to protect the environment. The campaign ended in success with over 50,000 people taking part, raising 6 million won ($5,130). P&G Korea has donated all funds to an NGO specializing in the environment, the Korea Zero Waste Movement Network, and specifically their project, "recycle to reduce Earth's temperature 1.5 degrees."

The project educates the local community about the right way to recycle starting from individual households, in order to take part in efforts to reduce carbon emissions through recycling.

"It takes a vast amount of energy and produces CO2 when manufacturing plastic, and without recycling it will be impossible to avoid severe pollution and climate change," a representative from the Korea Zero Waste Movement Network said. "Through the project, we want to educate local people about the correct ways to recycle, which will reduce greenhouse gases and contribute greatly to reducing the earth's temperature by 1.5 degrees."
