LG Uplus will showcase fifth-generation (5G) network technology-based art gallery at a subway station in Seoul, the mobile carrier said Sunday.
The company said it recently signed an agreement with Seoul Metro, which supervises the Seoul metropolitan area's subway system, to establish an art gallery called "U+ 5G Gallery" at Gongdeok Station.
Using a 5G-based artificial reality (AR) technology app of LG Uplus, visitors can enjoy art pieces in different ways. The artworks will be displayed at the platform screen door of the subway station beginning August.
"Using U+AR mobile app, the artworks installed at the platform screen door can be rotated and scaled as visitors can freely zoom in and out of the art works," the company said.
LG Uplus said the move is to transform the subway station into a cultural space similar to when European cities such as Lisbon, Naples and Stockholm collaborated with artists in designing subway stations.
"We hope the 5G technology can deliver a new experience of enjoying art for visitors to the subway station," Ha Hyun-hwoi, left, vice chairman and CEO of LG Uplus, said in a statement.
"Seoul Metro has been trying to transform subway stations on Line 6 into art platforms," said Seoul Metro CEO Kim Tae-ho. "The collaboration with LG Uplus can provide a new kind of cultural experience for visitors."
