Kakao Games has set up the subsidiary Life MMO that will deal with "gamification" services, the games unit of internet firm Kakao announced Friday.

Gamification is a word used to describe the application of aspects of a game to real life in different applications and industries.

Though the word can be used in other different ways Kakao Games defines the meaning of the word as a new type of service to solve problems in the real world, deliver knowledge and attract someone's attention by combining the mechanism of games.

Kakao Games said Life MMO will become its core subsidiary dedicated to develop gamification services and researches.

"We had operated an internal organization dedicated to develop and research the gamification service and has decided to spin off the unit into a new company," a Kakao Games official said.

Life MMO has been working on "Project R," a gamification service.

"Users of the service will be able to maximize the excitement of outdoor activities. The Project R features a competitive element occurring in game. With the combination, the gamification service will make people compete with each other while doing outdoor activities such as walking or riding a bicycle," the official said.

To set up a new subsidiary, Kakao Games and Kakao Mobility, the transportation business unit of Kakao, invested their capital. "The three firms will cooperate in various fields to create a synergy," Kakao Games said.

Namkoong Whon, co-CEO of Kakao Games, will serve as head of the subsidiary firm, Kakao Games said.

"Converging with gamification and other new technologies, we will come with various kinds of contents that can appeal to mass audiences," Namkoong said. "Through the service that everyone in the world can empathize with we will try to advance the era of gamification and later grow to a global firm."
