Smartphones are getting popular in Korea, and the explosion in sales appears to be fueled by prices that continue to fall.
There also seems to be a real chance that the next smartphone model released by KT, the country's second-largest mobile telephony carrier behind SK Telecom, will be offered virtually for free.
KT has been generating a massive buzz in the premium phone market since releasing the Apple iPhone last November, a move its arch-rival, SK Telecom, still struggles to match.
KT is looking to continue its hot streak by releasing a series of smartphones powered by the Google-backed Android operating systems, which seems to be the best bet to give Apple and its do-it-all handset a run for its money in the high-end phone market.
With the company vowing to splurge in handset subsidies to gain a marketing edge against SK Telecom, KT's next highly-touted smartphone model will be offered for free.
Next in KT's smartphone pipeline is LG Electronics' "LG KH5200," the first Android-based model released in Korea by the world's No. 3 handset vendor, and basically the local version of the LG GW620 that was released on foreign markets last month.
The handset, which could hit the market as early as next week, is built around a 3.2-inch touch screen, a full QWERTY keyboard and boasts a wide variety of capabilities, including social networking features, GPS, Wi-Fi and supports up to 32-gigabytes in external memory.
It has been garnering positive reviews overseas, which are also resulting in a pre-launch buzz among gadget lovers here.
LG KH5200 is regarded as a budget product among smartphones, with a factory price of around 600,000 won. However, with KT planning to provide around 500,000 won in handset subsides for each model, and LG believed to be chipping in an additional 100,000 won, it looks as if the LG KH5200 will be the first smartphone provided to local mobile users for free.
KT users choosing the carrier's cheapest flat-rate data plan, which charges 35,000 won per month, could get the LG KH5200 phone at the price of around 100,000 won.
However, those signing under plans that charge 45,000 won or more are expected to get the phones for free.
By quickly generating a market for the LG KH5200, KT is looking to retain its bright start in the smartphone market and further dent the armor of SK Telecom, which plans to rely on a slew of Android handsets to steal back the momentum.
The success of LG KH5200 is also critical for LG Electronics, as it prepares to compete with archrival Samsung Electronics in the emerging market of Android-powered handsets.

공짜 스마트폰 나온다
월 4만5,000원짜리 요금제를 2년간 가입하면 공짜로 구할 수 있는 스마트폰이 나온다.
KT는 이르면 다음 주 출시 예정인 LG전자의 안드로이드폰 'LG KH5200'에 대해 애플 '아이폰'에 버금가는 최대 50만원의 보조금을 책정했다. 이와 별도로 제조사인 LG전자도 동일 제품에 국내업체가 내놓는 첫 안드로이드폰이라는 점을 감안 10만원 가량의 장려금을 지급하기로 한 것으로 전해졌다.
이 제품의 출고가격이 60만원대라는 점을 감안하면 이통사 보조금과 제조업체의 장려금을 합할 경우 사실상 단말기 가격에 맞먹는 지원이 이뤄지는 셈이다.
이에 따라 LG KH5200은 KT의 스마트폰 요금제 중 가장 저렴한 월 3만5,000원짜리 'i-슬림' 요금제로 2년 약정할 경우 10만원 내외면 구입가능하고, 월 4만5,000원짜리인 'i-라이트' 이상을 택할 경우 사실상 단말기 할부대금이 면제될 것으로 보인다.
애플 아이폰과 삼성전자 옴니아2, 모토로라의 모토로이 등 최근 출시된 스마트폰 대부분이 무료로 구하려면 9만원 상당의 요금제를 가입해야 했던 것과 비교해보면 파격적이라는 게 업계의 반응이다. 기존 스마트폰은 대부분 월 4만5,000원짜리 요금제 기준으로는 20만원대 중반의 구입비용을 내야 한다.
LG KH5200이 이처럼 파격적인 가격에 출시되는 것은 KT와 LG전자의 이해관계가 맞아떨어졌기 때문이다. KT는 아이폰에 이어 안드로이드폰인 'LG KH5200'으로 시장의 주도권을 잡겠다는 구상이다. LG전자 역시 삼성전자에 앞서 안드로이드폰을 파격적인 가격에 내놓음으로써 지난 해 3분기 이후 주춤한 국내 시장 점유율을 끌어올린다는 계획이다.
