Volvo has seen a sharp rise in sales in Korea thanks to soaring popularity of its luxury sedans ― the S90 and S60, the Korean unit of the Swedish carmaker said Tuesday.

Volvo Car Korea said it sold 4,318 Volvo vehicles from January to April, a 26 percent increase year-on-year. "We saw a sales spike thanks to the increasing popularity of the S-series sedans, which saw a whopping 192 percent increase in sales for the first four months of this year compared to last year," a Volvo Korea official said.

Volvo Korea surpassed the 1,000 sales mark again in April, with 1,128 vehicles sold, a 23 percent increase year-on-year. "Volvo has been providing a wide range of vehicles, not only SUVs but also sedans," the official added.

Lee Yun-mo, managing director at Volvo Car Korea, said Volvo's S90 and S60 sedans have been enjoying soaring popularity as their design and features are popular among Korean customers.

"With our Drive-E powertrains, Swedish luxury interior and best-in-class safety feature, our sedans have been increasingly appealing to Korean customers," Lee said.

The company said its S-series is equipped with strong and efficient T5 Drive-E turbocharged four-cylinder engines to offer a "dynamic yet comfortable ride" to drivers. The superiority of Volvo's engine was recognized by numerous car reviewers, being included in the 10 Best Engines of 2015 award by American car magazine WardsAuto.

Another feature is the advanced air conditioning, the Interior Air Quality System (IAQS), which ensures clean cabin air, detecting substances such as nitrous oxides and carbon monoxide.

Known as a company that puts safety first, the advanced safety features of the S90 and S60 are other selling points.

"We offer the highest level of safety options for every model of our S-series car. Specifically, the Pilot Assist II feature combines adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, enabling drivers to drive comfortably over long distances," the firm said.

Its City Safety automated braking system, which detects obstacles or pedestrians in front of the vehicle, is also a standard for the S-series.

In addition, Volvo Car Korea provides maintenance for five years or 100,000 kilometers, the most generous warranty program among imported cars.
