LG Uplus has upgraded its artificial intelligence (AI) technology-based services for people with visual impairments to help them live more independently, the company said Tuesday.

"We have been providing audio book service app Book Reading Library and visual assistant app Sullivan Plus for people with visual impairments and these services have become more convenient to use through the latest updates," an LG Uplus official said.

For the Book Reading Library app, users can now use the book recommendation feature so that they can learn about books that deal with currently emerging social issues or popular subjects. To help them better use the service, the company also upgraded some features such as "bookmark" and "replay."

The telecommunications company also increased the number of audio books available to 11,000. It had provided books in seven categories, but added five more categories such as self-improvement, health and childcare, humanities and social sciences.

For the Sullivan Plus app, the company added five more languages -- English, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Chinese -- and rolled out an international version for Google's Android device users living outside Korea.

Sullivan Plus assists people with visual impairments in their daily routines as it narrates the objects that users photograph with their smartphone camera. Using the app's AI-based voice guidance, users can also get to their destinations.

LG Uplus also rolled out an iOS version of Sullivan Plus for Apple device users and will launch the global version in December. The app is developed by local startup Tuat and LG Uplus has offered marketing and technical assistants.

The telecommunications company vowed it will keep trying to improve the quality of its services to benefit more disabled people.

"By listening carefully to the voice of people with vision impairment or low vision, we will keep trying to improve the quality of our services so that they can enjoy our contents more easily and conveniently," Ryu Chang-su, head of the Smart Home Product Group at LG Uplus.
