Samsung SDI plans to showcase its next-generation battery cells using innovative materials at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, which kicked off Monday, local time.
The Korean battery maker said it will prove its distinguished technology by presenting a roadmap for the development of solid-state batteries during the event, which runs until Jan. 27.
Solid-state batteries are believed to be safer than liquid electrolytes, which are considered to be flammable.
Samsung SDI said the solid-state battery would allow electric vehicles (EVs) to travel more than 700 kilometers on a single charge. .
The company will also exhibit a wide range of battery cells, modules and packs including fast-charging, high-capacity batteries for EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) under the theme of "Charged for Auto 2.0" in a bid to captivate global automakers.
Auto 2.0, a term introduced by Goldman Sachs in 2017, refers to "the transformation of cars into electric and fully autonomous vehicles in the coming years, combined with the business model shift from car ownership to utilizing the shared economy."
Other products to be displayed include battery cells allowing EVs to travel more than 600 kilometers on a single charge in addition to low voltage system (LVS) packs equipped with advanced technology.
Samsung SDI said global automakers are mulling ways of improving EV travel distance through an increase in energy density and reducing EV prices at the same time.
The firm said its new products to be introduced during the Detroit auto show will demonstrate a significant increase in energy density. This would allow automakers to equip fewer battery cells with their EVs, helping them reduce costs significantly.
"Batteries are at the center of a paradigm shift in the automobile industry," Samsung SDI CEO Jun Young-hyun said. "Through our distinguished technology and consistent innovation, we will push the Auto 2.0 era forward and lead the market."
