Nexon, one of Korea's largest game developers, has been releasing a series of new games abroad to generate larger income outside the country, the company said Tuesday.
On June 21, the company began a global service for "Darkness Rises," an action role-playing game (RPG), which is offered in 13 languages including English, Chinese, Thai, German and French.
"Darkness Rises" is the latest of the firm's "Dark Avenger" series whose accumulated downloads have reached 35 million worldwide.
The company said the new game received roaring attention from users around the world even before its release with the number of those who registered in advance reaching 1 million.
"Darkness Rises got off to a smooth start as it entered the top 10 game apps in terms of sales in Thailand," a Nexon official said, noting that the firm has made a lot of efforts to customize the game by adding a variety of non-player characters (NPC) and costumes.
The company also plans to release "Marvel Battle Lines" globally within the year in cooperation with Marvel Entertainment.
"Marvel Battle Lines" is a card battle game based on the intellectual properties (IP) of Marvel superheroes, including Iron Man, Spiderman and Black Panther, who have thrilled fans around the world.
"The game will offer an inventive storyline with the participation of Alex Irvine, who has written comics and novels for Marvel," the official said. "With the integration of Marvel's excellent IPs and Nexon's creativity, the game will provide lots of fun for users."
Another new game the publisher is preparing to release is the mobile version of its side-scrolling massively multiplayer online RPG "MapleStory."
The firm conducted a global pilot test of "MapleStory M" in January to verify game elements and held an event in Los Angeles in April to which it invited more than 500 "MapleStory" players. Developers of "MapleStory," "MapleStory M" and "MapleStory 2" were also present at the event.
The firm is currently making last-minute efforts to improve the user interface (UI) with the goal of releasing the game worldwide within the year.
"With MapleStory M, we will actively target the global market including North America, as its original version, MapleStory, has been consistently popular there for 12 years," the official said.
The official added that its multi-hero RPG "Overhit," which was officially released in Japan, May 29, has seen steady growth in popularity as well, becoming the No. 7 game app in terms of sales on the Apple App Store there.
The firm operated a taskforce to more effectively target the Japanese market and customized scenarios and characters of the game for users.
"This year, we plan to release a series of new games that are competitive in the global market," said Park Jae-min, head of the mobile business division of the game firm. "We will enhance localizing work and marketing activities to better target the overseas market."
