Daewoo Engineering & Construction (E&C) is expanding its overseas nuclear power plants capacity.
Daewoo E&C said Thursday it signed an agreement with the state-run nuclear operator Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) KPS, KEPCO E&C, KEPCO Nuclear Fuel and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction to jointly cooperate in nuclear exports bids in the Czech Republic and Poland in the Polish capital, Warsaw, Sept. 19.
This agreement came after a consortium of Daewoo E&C and Doosan Heavy were chosen as the partners of the KHNP-led new nuclear power plant projects in the two European countries on Aug. 28.
Korea's state-run nuclear companies and the consortium have gone all out to win the mega-sized nuclear power plant project orders, which will be worth up to 21 trillion won ($19 billion) each, from the Czech Republic and Poland.
Poland will build three nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 4,500-megawatts and the Czech Republic will build two nuclear reactors with 1,000-megawatt capacity each. It is expected that the two countries will select the preferred bidders for the power plants late next year.
Daewoo E&C also took part in a nuclear forum at the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Sept. 20, to research the local nuclear market in Poland and promote the superiority of Korea's nuclear technology.
"Given Korea's superior nuclear technology and construction and management ability of nuclear power plants, we will be able to win nuclear export bids in the Czech Republic and Poland," Daewoo E&C CEO Kim Hyung said.
Daewoo E&C is competitive with its nuclear power plant projects offering overall engineering and related facilities.
Since the company conducted engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, which is generally referred to as a turnkey operation, for the Jordan Research and Training Reactor in 2009, Daewoo E&C has successfully exported its nuclear power systems.
